Child, Adolescent, and Family Therapy

The cornerstone of the Child Guidance Center for over 50 years, this program utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to provide a broad range of mental health assessments and treatment services tailored to meet the individual needs of children and families referred under non-emergency circumstances. Comprehensive assessments are conducted for all children and families referred to the Child Guidance Center. An interdisciplinary team reviews the assessment and develops a treatment plan tailored to meet the individual needs of each child and family. Specialized evaluations, such as developmentals for preschoolers, psychological and neuropsychological testing, and psychiatric assessments, are provided to understand more complex situations. Treatment services include individual, group, or family therapy, parent guidance and play therapy, or medications as needed. Care coordination services are provided to assist families in accessing other community services to meet the multiple needs of the child and family.

 Emergency Mobile Crisis Services

Since 1987, the Crisis program has provided immediate mental health assessment and crisis stabilization services for children and adolescents experiencing serious psychiatric symptoms or severe reactions to a recent traumatic event. With a special focus on youth suicide prevention, mobile services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, successfully intervening with many critically disturbed youngsters, avoiding the more costly and disruptive alternatives of hospitalization and out-of-home placement.

Lower Fairfield County Child Sexual Abuse Response Team

Since 1989, the Child Guidance Center has coordinated an interagency team integrating criminal justice and protective services investigations while providing comprehensive services for child sexual abuse victims and non-offending parents. Specially trained Child Guidance Center therapists conduct investigative interviews at the request of the police or the state child protection agency and provide crisis therapy for the child and supportive services for the family to help them cope with the trauma of victimization. This team was the first in Connecticut to achieve national accreditation and serves as a model program in New England, providing training throughout the region.

Crime Victims and Community Policing Partnership

24-hour outreach and mental health services are provided to child victims and "high-risk" children identified by police. The partnership aims to mitigate the psychological consequences of violence and other traumatic events on children while also reducing the likelihood that youngsters exposed to violence will become perpetrators of violence.

Intensive Home Based Services

Intensive child-specific family-focused services are provided at home and community sites for youngsters with high-risk behavioral problems to reduce delinquent and dangerous behavior and avoid placement in residential or juvenile corrections facilities.

HIV Affected Children

Specialized mental health services are provided for children with HIV/AIDS or who are affected by the disease of their parents or close relatives, or the death of family members from AIDS. Services include psychotherapy, to help the child and family deal with the stigma still associated with the disease, assisting parents with the difficulties associated with informing their children about the parent/relative's illness or informing the child that he/she is infected. In situations where the person with AIDS is in the terminal stage of the disease and/or following a death, additional services include counseling for prospective guardians and bereavement counseling.

 Community Emergency Response Program

On-site assistance and counseling are provided in response to emergencies impacting large groups in the community (i.e., suicide, terrorism, school violence, death of a youngster or teacher, natural disasters, etc.).

 Local System of Care

Intensive case management services are provided to families of seriously emotionally disturbed children. Working in partnership with the family, the case manager develops a service plan and helps access and coordinate services to support the family's efforts to maintain the child in the home and reduce the need for out-of-home placement.

 Managed Service System

A Managed Service System is a consortium of provider agencies funded by the Connecticut Department of Children and Families convened under the authority of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families local area office to assure that a comprehensive and coordinated array of services is available at the local level to meet the behavioral health and community support needs of children and their families. Managed Service System is particularly interested in providing services for children with intensive mental health needs who may be returning to the community from residential treatment or at risk of placement in a residential facility.

Children and Parent Resource Team

Under the Child Guidance Center's leadership, this interagency team provides coordinated services for families of children with multiple needs requiring services from several community agencies with a special focus on families whose children are at risk for abuse and neglect.

 Professional Consultation Service

Professional consultation is provided to area preschools and schools, courts, residential facilities and shelters, substance abuse programs and other youth-serving agencies to help them more effectively respond to the special needs of youngsters with emotional or behavioral problems.

 Parent Consultation Service

An one or two session consultation is provided to parents with specific questions or concerns about parenting practices or issues concerning the emotional, developmental, behavioral, or social
well-being of their child.

 Community Education

Mental health seminars and workshops are conducted for the general public and professionals working with children to increase awareness of issues affecting child development and enhance the emotional well-being of children and families.
